I am looking for some where hot to travel to at Xmas, but as my husband doesn't like to travel too far we are thinking about Tenerife or one of the other islands.  Does anyone know of anywhere that is not full of nightclubs, or 18 -30 types, (as at 41 we are bit old !!!)  and perhaps can recommend a nice hotel or villa. Many thanks everyone.

Canary Islands are ideal........personally for a short break of say 1 week I would go for Lanzarote.  Even the main resort of Puerto del Carmen isn`t overcrowded but the resort of Matagorda is quieter [even though it`s closer to the airport] as long as you don`t mind the Germans too much. Public transport is good and taxis are cheap and can be hired for a full day for sightseeing trips......works out cheaper than package tour company prices.
Los Gigantes in the Tenerife is a lovely place, quiet and unspoilt. Thomsons Gold have a super hotel called the Los Gigantes.  We stayed on their all inclusive deal for a fortnight, the food was fantastic as was the hotel.
I've been to tenerife and if you're not looking for clubs, it may be the wrong island for you. O've literally just got back from lanzarote, and like ianess would recommend that. I did it all separately, got my flights from lastminute.com and booked the hotel through hotelopia.com and paid less than 250 for a week. It was great, warm, but don't expect it to be hot cos it only is when the sun's out (which was three days out of our week). I stayed in Costa Teguise and there's lots of nice places, not too clubby, and lots of families around i think at 24, my friend and i were the youngest people in our hotel. Enjoy it, a bit of sunshine is great at this time of year!

I'd agree with Becks, i've been to Tenerife 4 times and travlled around by car to all the other resorts there as well. it's really more geared up for the younger sort, that's unless you stay in other places of the island - which may be quaint and unspoilt but you'd be lucky to spot another englishman while your there. Not good for making friends. Also the beaches are terrible at Tenerife, black volcanic sand gets you filthy and its usually too hot to walk on because it attracts the heat.

Why dont' you try Fuerteventura, thats supposed to be brilliant for a relaxing beach holiday, perfect white sands and lovely little bars and restaurants, check it out on the net, i'm sure you'll like it.

Portinatx on the north coast of Ibiza is pretty nice.  Don't worry, it's miles away from the main clubbing towns (basically the opposite end of the island).  It's really a family resort, pretty quiet & pretty.  Unlike most of Ibiza it's also pretty green - in fact, many of the coastal scenes for the 1958 film South Pacific were filmed there.
