Hi would this be the Hollingworth Lake in the North West of England? If so, I used to live nearby and it used to be lovely. Popular with tourists and walkers, We used to go for strolls and picnics there when the kids were little. Also great if you enjoy windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking etc. And there's a chippy there which used to be really good. Not been to the area in quite number of years but ,yes the scenery is good, don't know about water quality but I would have thought it can't be too bad if people use the lake alot.
Hope this helps.
I live about 20 mins from the lake, its nice for an afternoon or so , not much there really couple cafe's amusment arcade, oh and the lake canoes and the like, no peddeloes or out like that. water quality, cant't say, wouldnt swim in myself .
I can only echo the above comments. It is a beautiful place and can look atmospheric with the rain sweeping across it. There is a birdwatchers' hide on the far side of the lake and there are several nice pubs along the road side. The nearest railway station is Littleborough which is on the Rochdale to Halifax line.
A bit away from there, up Todmorden is nice, great up at Hebden Bridge especially the canel boats and the like.
There are days that I yearn for Toddy and Hebden Bridge.
Went there more times than I care to remember and never took a camera!
Yes Sprouts (cant say I like them) lovely up there, far better than around the lake.Old Hepptonstall is my fav place up there.
I love Tod + Hebden Bridge. Hollinworth Lake is like Blackpool Pleasure Beach on a sunny weekend.....totally ruined these days :-(
I was born top o't cragg on erringden moor above Mytholmroyd, my Mum was from Tod, well, Blackshaw Royd, my grandparents and aunts etc are all buried at Cross Stone

Hollingworth Lake is linked to the family as one of my great great grandfathers worked lots of the stone around there, and Ripponden Arches

Bathsheba is right, bit of sun and they come from all over, bring their dogs, the lot. Not like it use to be around the lake
My parents were married at Heptonstall.
The railway station is on Smithy Bridge Road.
I want to go now. Is Walkley Clogs still at Hebden?
Dot thats a lovely church in Hepptonstall, its a cobbled village with tons of history. Hebden Bridge is suppose to be mentioned in the doomsday book, Not sure where I heard that. Mythelroyd is the next town up form Hebden Bridge, don't know that one too well
The clog place is still there

aww sounds lovely.

i'm going sailing there for 5 days.

so would you say that you wouldn't go for a swim in the lake? if so good because the people i'm going with would make you do a 30 minute swim or something at 7am if the water was clean enough.

is there much wildlife in and around the lake?
Plenty wild life, ducks, swans ect. It will be cold, its quite open around the lake gets a lot of wind. Weather been bad up here, august maybe better. I would not swim in the lake. Great place up that end , try a canal boat they have a visitors center at Hebden Bridge

we're there on 16th-23rd august.

is it normally windy enough to do sailing?
I live in Manchester and love it up there, used to go up for a nice meal in the Wine Press (pub in the side of the lake) every now and again.

It's also a lovely place to sit outside on a sunny day.

There's a lovely looking italian restaurant (Bella Vista or something like that) on the road up there after you come through Milnrow, never tried it but looks really nice.

If you are taking a car there are lots of lovely places round there.

we're taking two minibuses.

plus i don't think that we will be going to resturants or pubs seeing as there are 20 12-16 year olds and a few adults going.

Question Author
it was great.

there were 19 kids and 3 adults plus isntructors at the centre.

it was too windy for sailing on wednesday and thurdsday so we managed to get stage 2 sailing on monday and tuesday and level one power on wednesday and thursday.

we went to the chippy in littleborough the night we got there and our instructors cooked the other meals.

the onlty time i capsized was when we had to do a drill in a bosun (quite an achievement considering i was the most novice sailer as everyone else had already got stage 1)

the water was a bit murky but considerably cleaner than the broads, from which i am only 1 mile away from.
