Where's the best place to stay in Gran Canaria?

Hi there, we want to go to Gran Canaria in August but are unsure of the best place to stay. I've read lots about different resorts and Playa Del Ingles seems that the most lively. Our factors to consider are:

1) We have a 15 month old son.
2) 4/5 star hotel or aparthotel.
3) Easy walking distance to beach, shops & restaurants.
4) A hotel that caters more towards the british (I've heard that most are geared towards the Germans and the nightly entertainment is in German).

We are open to other places other than playa del ingles as long as its lively.

Any help is much appreciated. x
