Stuck on last couple of answers, and I know I will kick myself, but I am tying my brain in knots and my husband wants his supper! : 28a Pratically cover one much admired mountain in Greece (7). ?ELIC?N.( I want it to be 'pelicon' - Pelion mountain in Greece, c from cover, but word doesn't exist). And 24d Die to get into exercise pit h once upon a time (6). Have been working on 'die' as plinth without the 'h'. but can't get it to work! (Is 20d 'undergo'? - seems too straightforward for a Mephisto!)

Helicon is, I think, a Greek mountain.
28, Helicon
What letters do have for 24d please and also what is the clue for 20d.
24d - perish??
24d P long e
Question Author
Helicon is probably correct. Now have ?LON?E for 24d. Clue for 20d is 'Gone wandering about to clear up retrogressive experience' (UN??RG?)....

Sorry, I also have an 'O' at the end of 20d...
Question Author
Kayakamina - I also wanted it to be 'plonge', from the clue, but only found 'pemican'/condensed stuff in Chambers....
Undergo is the only word I can think of to fit your pattern and the definition.
Plonge is correct . It means to PITCH suddenly (plunge)
Question Author
Dearest Kayakamina,
I'm not doubting you at all, but still can't get my head around this one... die = long, with excercise = PE.....but how does the 'C" get into PIT-H from 'once upon a time'...? Circa?....
Question Author
Sorry, Kayakimina, and all you lovely people who respond to questions on this site, and thank you for your patience with me. I get the 'plonge' clue now - I was trying to make the Mephisto even more complicated than it is!...
