Yes we do. I don't know if it has been implemented yet but we now need passports for Canada and Mexico or will in the near future.
As Sitges is, apparently, an American citizen, I'm sure that his/her answer (regarding future changes) will be correct.

However, my link is to the website of the Canadian embassy in Washington, so it seems reasonable to assume that the information there (which states that evidence of US citizenship, such as a birth certificate, will suffice) is currently valid.

The simple answer is YES they do.

The slight proviso is that for the next 3 weeks, if travelling by land or sea, other ID will do. By air a passport is already necessary.

From 1 June a passport will be needed whatever the mode of travel.

It's more a question of what is needed to reenter the US than what the Canadians will accept. It's misleading to look at it from just their side.
