What i did recently is buy a small amount of Euro before i went and get the rest out in Spain the rate is very slightly higher although not much.
went to my sister apartment near La Manga last september, exchange rate was around 1.28 euro to the pound, best I could get here was 1.18 or 1.19 euro to the pound. But when I got there, just use your normal bank card in the ATM, I got the real rate, 1.28, and my bank (alliance & leicester) charged me 2.50 (about 3.20 euro)for a foreign transaction, so bear in mind that I'm getting 10 cents to the pound more, if you withdraw more than 32 pounds worth, or about 40 euro, you are getting a much better deal. Just get enough here for your arrival in spain, and use the cash machines when you are there. As soon as you put your card in the machine, it will recognise it as a foreign card and come up with a list of languages, french, German, Italian and english, select the appropriate one and all the instructions then come up in your language. When it asks which account you are withdrawing from, select 'credit card', as the machine recognises all foreign cards as credit cards. It works fine in Cajamurcia and Santander machines
