I went on a cruise last year down the Pacific side of Mexico. We made 3 stops and US Dollars were accepted everywhere with no problem. I know this was in touristy areas, so can't comment on the country 'at large'.

US Dollars are prefered by locals, corrupt officals like them aswell. I have friends from s. america and they say it is always good to have at least some dollars.
