Hi all
I have a 13 week old pup and am trying to train him the basics i.e. sit, come, lie, leave etc
Hes doing really well and ive just started using a clicker as apparently the sound re-inforces the correct behaviour more accuratly and faster then words can.
Im wondering if any of you have used this technique and if you have found it effective?
Thanks

Yes I have used it and it can be very effective - but only if the timing is spot on. If you get the timing wrong you can end up training in a behaviour you don't want (eg praising the dog for the wrong action).

This article is a useful guide to clicker training, especially 'the lessons' bit down the left hand side:

That is totally the opposite to what clicker training does, it reinforces the correct behaviour, it does not serve to remind them not to do something you don't want them to do. Done correctly it is a brilliant training aid, done wrongly it is worse than useless. Why not try to find a training class that uses clicker training, I am sure you will have lots of fun training him.

Thanks for the replies, that site was useful Kita. Ive been using the clicker and hes quickly caught on. We are starting a training class in a few weeks but im not sure if they use clickers. Do you think it will be confusing if im teaching him at home with the click followed by a treat then at the training classes with just a treat?
Zacsmaster I use voice comands too once he is doing the behaviour.
