It depends on your airline, I've been on some that only allow you a certain amount per bag but you are allowed more than one bag per person. Others charge you per bag. Weight allowance will depend on the airline, check your documentation
Surely that's not a good idea anyway - if your luggage goes missing then neither of you will have any clothes!
You can pool your allowances with most airlines. However, all airlines that I know of impose an upper limit of 32kg for any one bag, and some have a limit as low as 25kg.

I doubt that any carrier will allow a single item weighing 40kg.
I always thought the weight limits was partly to protect the Health & Safety of the baggage handlers - a case weighing 40kg is pretty hard to manoeuvre.
i just got back from egypt - case going out 28 kg and nothing said coming back 25kg and fined 40 - I argued that it was not a problem going out and that it weighed less. I would not have been able to get the flight unless I paid - I saw several people fined 8 for every kilo over 20! It is a rip off and according to the staff in Egypt the money goes to the airline XL in this case so you cant even blame the other country - they must have known when I and other people left gatwick that the weights were problematic. this never happened to me before and infact this case had less than i have taken before!
Most charter flights have a limit of 20kg. Many allow no excess whether you pay or not.

On the way out you were lucky. On the way back you were not "fined" but simply asked to pay the excess. It costs more in fuel to fly a heavy aircraft than a light one.
I think you will find the upper limit is actually 52 kgs but you have to pay after the free allowance and a "heavy luggage" sticker attached to case. It is not generally known and certainly not encouraged. Last Sept I flew with BA to Spain and my luggage was32kgs - no problem as long as it was in one suitcase: To be on thesafe side check with your airline.
Have just checked BA and the upper limit is now 32kgs - per person unless it's a musical instrument or similar. but don't think it's a good idea to take 40kgs in one case.
