Drive from US to Canada, then fly in Canada?

Without having a passport, I know you cannot fly from the US to Canada. However, I live near the Canadian border (Vancouver BC). Could I drive to Vancouver, using my drivers license and birth certificate to cross the border, then fly anywhere in Canada without a problem?
