I need to find a location for a weekend break suitable for five girls in late twenties. Seaside, pubs, good accomodation preferred, but not anywhere too elderly, young, rough or twee. (And not Brighton, as have been there for past few years!). Thank you.

Consider Cromer in Norfolk, it meets all your criteria, and you can always taxi or drive over to Norwich which is a lively uni. town if you want to go clubbing.
Assuming you include Stansted as part of London, an hour check-in and a 45 minutes flight to Newquay, you can get a return to the Cornish seaside from RyanAir for about 50 quid a head.
BOURNEMOUTH!! I am a huge fan, lived there for three years, gota all you want and more, not too many coffin dodgers, few students at this time of years and more bars and clubs than you can shake a stick out.. All just two hours away...
Southwold.
