a little out of your way maybe, but well worth the detour.....

If you are coming down the M1 towards the A42/M42 junction heading for B'ham, come off at J 24. Take the 4th exit which is the A453 dual c'way running parallel to the M1. About half way down there are laybys on both sides of the dual c'way, both of which have a portakabin greasy spoon. Not many niceties, but a good breakfast. If you need to 'refresh' yourself afterwards, there is a proper services 1/4 mile further on at the roundabout. You have access to the A42 southbound there as well.

If you went off the end of the runway, you would hit the layby.

Well I'm not sure about the greasy spoon bit, but if you exit New Street Station, walk down the ramp (if it's still there!) - there used to be a Mackie D's on the right. Erm...well..yes, a greasy spoon then.

I don't know if it's on your route but the Long Itch Diner at Long Itchington, Warwickshire is well worth a visit.
There is only one real contender around Derby , and that is the Saltbox Cafe, plenty of parking for cars and hgv, its clean and the staff are friendly , and the food is A1, It is situated at Hatton which is the second junction down from the Toyota factory going west on the A50 signed foston / Hatton, Well worth a visit and well recomended.

tufty - I thought of mentioning the Saltbox, but thought it was probably a bit off markie's route. Does the pub on the opposite corner still do an 84oz steak?
