There are loads of books on New York.

Why not buy a couple and save us having to do all the work for you:

Yes your maestro card should work out there - mine did, but check with your bank if you want to be sure. Your o2 phone may or may not, mine did, my boyfriend's did not. Phone o2 and make sure there are no bars or restrictions on your account that would prevent you receiving or making calls
Hmm well I don't really like reading through loads of guide books I think it's always better getting advice from people about what to do! I went for a week just before christmas last year, and thoroughly recommend doing the following:

* go up to the top of the rockefeller centre for views of manhattan (you can see the empire state building which you can't see if you go up the empire state building!)
* ice skating in central park (i can't skate to save my life but enjoyed it a lot)
* obligatory shopping - Macy's, Bloomingdales, Tiffany's
* go and see a show - we went to see the christmas show at radio city music hall it was great
* take a trip on the staten island ferry (i think it's free) and you can see the statue of liberty
* discount shopping - Century 21 and Daffy's near wall street and the World Trade Centre site
* wander round times square
* maybe visit the united nations
* walk through central park
* go and see the NY Nicks playing basketball

Whatever you do I'm sure you'll have a great time! I'm very jealous! :-)
Christmas is a great time in NYC. I spent Dec 25 there once on the streets as my hotel's heating had packed up and it was minus 20something outside. Fortunately cinemas, theatres and churches were open, and some shops. Stroll down 5th Av just admiring the Christmas windows, as well as doing the things others have suggested. But do be prepared to wrap up warm, just in case.

You can also skate, or watch the skaters, in the Rockefeller centre. I had Xmas dinner in the restaurant inside while I watched.

And everything is now supercheap.
Apply for a big apple greeter (BAG) - this is a free service where a local new yorker will spend some time with you showing you round the city. Its a fab service and I'd highly recommend it. http://www.bigapplegreeter.org/

You may want to book some meals in advance - use www.menupages.com for restaurant info.
Hi,
As jno says,it can be bitingly cold there in December.Dont worry though,they can cope with Arctic conditions much better there than they can in London.If you find you havent bought enough cold weather gear,you can get it in NY for a snip.If you get the chance,take the Gray Line bus out to Woodberry for even greater bargains.Takes about an hour and leaves from their 7th Ave offices.Have a good time
