My friend and I are wanting to go away somewhere to take in 2008, New York is our first choice but it's out of our budget (if any of you can find a flight and hotel package for around 500, I'd be grateful!).

Can any of you guys recommend somewhere?

I don't think Tenerife is for us. My friend is very much the wrong side of 30 too. LOL.

Dakota: Ive had some fantastic places where Ive celebrated Hogmanay. But Id have to say, Scotland has been among the best! Nevertheless, Ill see what I can come up with in line with yor budget.

First: Is the 500 for the two of you, or is it 500 each? If its each, you can certainly do New York City on that amount of money. Easily and with a bit to spare! If youd like details, let me know and Ill write further on that subject. Boston can also be the same way. There are fantastic parties going on around the Boston Common and at Haymarket Square.

If Europe is your interest, two of my favourite cities where people gather and celebrate are Prague and Budapest. Its an international crowd and youll find plenty of fellow Scots in both! Airfares are cheap as are accommodation. The women are stunningly beautiful and the beer never stops flowing.

Many young people enjoy Amsterdam as well. For me, its a bit old and overdone. Ive done it in the past, enjoyed it, and moved on. However, if youve not done it, start at Prinsengracht and head towards the red-light district. (Just follow the crowds). Its a continuous party loud and again, the beer never stops.

If youre looking for something more unusual, gather around Hans Christian Anderson in Copenhagen and let the good times roll. Tivoli Gardens, is transformed into a winter wonderland with hundreds of thousands of twinkling lights, and the sale of gallons of delicious hot glgg (mulled wine spiced with raisins and almonds).

Hope some of these ideas help

Fr. Bill

Hi VillageVicar,

I live in Scotland, I guess I don't really appreciate it when it's on my doorstep. If you can find a deal to NY for less than 500, I'll be shocked. LOL.

I'll look into Prague and Budapest :)
Dakota: I'm going to hold my hat in my hand as I write this. But I will share with you there are some fantastic ways to have the trip of your life to New York within your budget.

I gather youre young, you want adventure and you want fun. Ill show you how to maximise this and stay within your budget. AND perhaps best of all, Ill show you how to visit two cities for the price of one!

There are anomolies that exist within airline pricing structures. Each airfare is built with what is called a routing structure. This is the formula that determines what is allowable in your travel journey to arrive at your chosen destination. Just to let you know, I do these trips often, so I have it rather finely tuned.

Heres the scenario in staying within your 500 budget. On Saturday the 29th you need to take either the train or bus to Heathrow. (Apologies, but Im staying within your budget.) You can get fares for around 23 for this one way.

Next, you fly American airlines from Heathrow to Boston. You depart Heathrow at 1030, arrive Boston at 1300. If this appeals to you, let me know and Ill tell you which hotels to book.

On the 30th you fly from Boston to Kennedy Airport (we can do LaGuardia as well). You have all day to tour Boston, have a fantastic Lobster meal and see the sights. Depart at 1255 and arrive Kennedy at 1410. It should be a great day for taking photos in flight of the New York Skyline. Be sure to sit on the right hand side as the aircraft lines up for approach into LaGuardia or Kennedy. Take the train into Manhattan to Columbus Circle. Youll need to stay at either the YMCA at Lincoln Centre or the UN YMCA at 46th Street. Ill give you a list of cheap eats. You wont go hungry, I promise!

Part 2

Party Partybe sure to get your position at Times Square the following evening. It all starts to crowd up at around 2200.

Enjoy

New Years Day. Use the steam rooms at the YMCA and enjoy the Olympic size pool. You need to take the train to Kennedy no later than 1400 for an 1815 flight. Your flight arrives Heathrow at 0625, where you connect to the BA shuttle (actually its code-shared with American) back to Glasgow.

With the value of the dollar right now, you should still have a tenner in your pocket when you return!

Part 3

You must book these flights with the airlines website and NOT through Travelocity, Expedia or the sort. There are many important reasons why this is to your benefit. If you want to know, write and Ill explain.

Other return flight options:

From London:

Kayak: 276.00
Travelocity: 287.60

From Glasgow:
Kayak: 322

Some of these fares are what we call elbow fares. This means you travel in an elow fashion to get to your destination. For example: Flying London to Laguardia means you would have to change planes in either Chicago or Boston. Flying Air France means you have to change in Paris, etc.

Have I peaked your interest?
