Don't rely on them to ward off malaria, you need proper medicine for that. However, I used to get bitten by mossies on holiday and my practice nurse suggested taking Vit B tablets and I've never had a bite since. I use the ordinary Vit B tablets you can get from most supermarkets (B12 rings a bell), and take 1 a day for a week prior to going on hols and 1 a day whilst on hols.
It's supposed to be Vitamin B Complex tablets. I took them in a capsule form, but they were really huge and difficult to swallow. I also had a device with a battery from Lakeland which is supposed to emit a sound that mossies don't like. Not sure if you are male or female, but Avon also do a range of products that have been proven to deter mossies, Skin So Soft, the green one, in shower gel, body lotion etc, etc, which I also used. I think it really depends where you are going. If it's deepest Africa or the jungles of Thailand, then malaria pills are a necessity, if like us, you went thru the Panama Canal, then these other deterrents may work. I am always, always bitten, but didn't get a single bite with these things. Good luck!
There was something on AB recently about eating marmite to repel the mozzies.
