I have a son who has an Australian girlfriend. Last July he told me he intended to go to Australia with his girlfriend and get married. He emailed me in October and said he was in Australia and had a job and was taking driving lessons. In January he phoned his sister to tell her his girlfriend was pregnant and that they were now married. I find this hard to believe as my son, who although he is 22 years of age, is a drug user and has Police convictions for criminal damage and breaking and entering and they are the ones I know about. He has been in trouble since he was fifteen and has lived away from home since he was sixteen. On the rare occasions he contacts me it is on his mobile or by his UK email address. Amyone got any thoughts on this? Is it possible he is not in Australia or would he be allowed in because his girlfriend/wife is an Australian citizen?

I was under the impression that for some years now British citizens have required a visa to enter Australia and a criminal record may prejudice any visa application. However, he may have been able to obtain a visa for a temporary visit. Perhaps if you contact the Australian embassy in London they may be able to give you more information on entry requirements. Try Googling "Visa entry conditions for living in Australia" or something similar.
