nothing,it gets shredded
Depending on the T&C you may be able to get a refund on it.

What sort of ticket BTW - air, rail coach??
if it is an air ticket,,

it should have a not valid after date on it,,
this can be found on the right hand side of the ticket as u look at it....

most open tickets r only valid for 1 yr then it is not valid anymore and u have lost ur money.
As Dazf says, air tickets are only valid for a year. But you could contact the airline about re-newing it. I've done that in the past without a problem.
