US Route 90

Hi Readers,
I am currently planning a 6 - 7 week holiday in America in Summer which involves driving from Boston to Seattle along Route 90. Can anyone who has maybe done this before suggest any unobvious must - sees along the way? Also, what things can you do around Lake Winnipesaukee? Any Answers are most welcome!

We went whale watching in Gloucester which is near Boston, and really enjoyed it. Also enjoyed walking around Freedom Trail in Boston.

Firstly, welcome to the U.S.!
While in Boston don't dare miss Faneuil Hall (also known as Quincy Market, seen here... that and walking the Freedom Trail to Paul Revere's house and The Old North Church will take at least a day. When leaving Boston, go 2 hours north on Interstate 95 to Freeport, Maine and tour the L.L. Bean store... including ice cream at the "woodland entrance" outside from Ben and Jerry's. Take at least an extra day and drive the coastal area to see the wonderful light houses along the way. My favorite is Booth Bay, however the light at Portland Head is well worth the little effort, seen here...

The drive on Interstate 90, especially after leaving Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota gets to be somewhat boring... there's just no nice way of saying it. Across South Dakota to the Black Hills takes 4 or 5 hours of mile after mile of endless prairie broken only by your arrival at Wall Drug in Wall, SD. llike this...
You'll enjoy the Black Hills and Mt. Rushmore, but be sure to see the Crazy Horse monument nearby, as seen here.

Then across northern Wyoming, take time to see Devil's Tower near Sundance, Wyoming ... thus...

If you actually stay on I-90, you'll miss Yellowstone National Park since the best entrance from your direction will be through Cody, Wyoming, which has the finest western museum in the world here... You can go out the north entrance near Bozeman, Montana and pick up I-90 again.

After that, although having been through the area many times (we live in the western U.S.) you-re on your own. Seattle is several days of many things to do, including a ferry ride across the Straits of Juan de Fuqua, as seen here...

You'll be interested in hearing that gasoline is now less than$2.00 a U.S. gallon and expected to continue to drop.

If you are renting a car, don't assume that a one way rental will automatically be OK. Some companies won't allow it at all, some will charge a hefty surcharge. Get several quotes (particularly from consolidators here like Auto Europe) before committing yourself.

Sounds a good trip though.
