Long gone is the day of the 1 boat trip to Oz, but i'm soooo bored with flying and would rather get there by other means ,sea and land. I believe that 90% of the fun in life is in the journey, and flying cattle class and having to pay a king's ransom doesn't appeal anymore...I want an adventure!

Does anyone know if there are any organised boats (tourist or cargo) that can take you part / all of the way? I don't really want to do all of the Trans Siberian Rail road, then head south, i'd rather go south by boat....either through the Suez or down to the Cape of Good Hope ...I don't mind if it takes 4-6 weeks as long as I could keep costs to under 3,000. Any ideas? Thanks.

There are two possibilities:

cargo ship - probably a container vessel

Cruise ship - as a leg of a RTW voyage probably

Have a look here http://www.freighter-travel.com/travel-itinera ries.html for example - if your 3K is one way you should be roughly on budget..... A cruise will be comparable or more, but you get more for your money.
Here you go - for the return journey - Sydney to Southamtpon on the new Cunard ship the Queen Victoria - !!

wow, you guys are quick! Thanks for all the great links...I did this trip 10 year ago and after a successful trip from London to Singapore, overland...we got stuck there as there were no boats willing / able to transport us to Indonesia or Australia so we had to get a plane to Java. Looks like nothing much has changed on that front after having a quick read of those websites. I can't believe that I could get all the way to Sydney on the Cunard for under 5K!!! (great weak dollar), I a bit more of a rough it character so I will seriously entertain the cargo ship options and some trains. Cheers people!
I was in Oz and New Zealand in 1994 and met some guys who went on a cargo boat it took about 9 weeks from England if I remember and they had to work on it but it was hard graft and cheap cant remember cost now but it is possible if you can hack it I couldnt personally!
