I will be in San Diego, California, for 10 days in December. I want to rent a car and go somewhere that's around a 6-8 hour drive and stay there a couple of nights before returning to SD. Can anyone recommend a town/city that's worth visiting in this way? Thanks.

Las Vegas - no contest. The best city in the world.
Or if Las Vegas turns you off - San Francisco is a good alternative. (Having spent time in both, I prefer San Fran put that's just a personal thing).
Drive across the border (just South of SD) into Baja California - Ensenada is quite a nice place, and on the way down you can experience the delights of Tijuana (the only place abroad ever visited by many US citizens).
Have to agree with the above. I did fairly similar to yourself a couple of years ago and went to both Vegas and Ensenada. Tijuana is great but really scary for a novice overseas driver. Mexican motoring is quite intimidating to start with and you must get special insurance and car rental policies that cover this - but it is worth it. How I wich I could go back. Of course, nobody has mentioned Los Angeles yet, but that is an fascinating city with amazing contemporary culture. If you had two days there do Hollywood blvd, Santa Monica Pier, Beverley Centre and Rodeo Drive and take a cruise down Crenshaw on a Sunday (but keep your windows closed and don't stop!)
Hi, I have been to San Diego and my sister lives in San Francisco! Some advice for you: If choosing Las Vegas, first read this Web page, it will tell you how long the drive from San Diego to Las Vegas takes and which driving route is ideal: http://www.virtualtourist.com/f/p/5e2f/ Once you are in Las Vegas, it's a relatively short trip to visit the Grand Canyon, which is one of the best places to visit in the U.S.! There is more to see there than one would think!! I personally would not recommend a drive to San Francisco, because it would take at least 8 hours (tiring!) and could take up to 10 if you run into rush-hour traffic around Los Angeles. However, the view is spectacular all along that route-- the Pacific Coast Highway-- so you could always drive on that for a few hours without going all the way to San Fran. Los Angeles is very close to San Diego, if that appeals to you.... And, honestly, you would have no trouble spending the entire 10 days in San Diego without a moment of boredom. The San Diego Zoo is one of the best in the USA! There are top-notch museums, animal parks, theme parks, etc., galore.
