A friend of mine said she had passed a castle/house on her holiday in Scotland that is used as Hogwarts school in the Harry Potter films does anyone know if this place really exists if so where is it?

The one you are referring to is Alnwick Castle.
Alnwick castle was used, I believe, in the first two HP films. Certainly it was used for the Quidditch lesson in the Philosophers Stone.

Alnwick is situated just south of Berwick, just the English side of the Scottish border, if that makes any sense. Lindisfarne/Holy Island is right nearby as well. Alnwick castle and gardens are the most wonderful places to visit.
