I have a six year old PC with an AMD Duron 700 processor. How do I go about upgrading and generally speeding things up?

By a new computer.

To be honest, you can only speed your existing PC up so much.

The latest CPUs will not fit in your motherboard so that is out.

You may find that more memory will help. If you have say 256Mb try going up to 512Mb for example.

But you can buy a new PC system unit (less monitor, keyboard, etc) for about 200 pounds and I think that is your best solution.
I agree 100% with vehelpfulguy! upgrading the CPU within the limits of the motherboard gives minimal performance difference where as a memory upgrade is far better. A new PC will give the most economical benefit.
Yep, at that age, you'd be throwing good money after bad. Your PC is already obsolete, and the older it gets, the harder it will be to find replacement components for it. Much better to put that replace / replacement money into a new PC - you'll be very glad you did.
