I've done it 100 times. It takes about 4-5 hours. There is nothing to see on the way except desert. Please be aware it is a very HOT trip. Tempetures of 120 degrees are common. If you've never been to Las Vegas, prepare yourself. It will blow your mind. There is so much to see and there is also a lot of cool free things to do with a lot of them being outdoors. There is so many shows to see and Stars performing there you will not get bored for a second. If you spend one second of boredom in LV than you're probably dead. Stay at a Casino as opposed to a hotel. Casinos are less expensive and make it conveniet for gambleing and walking around to other casinos. All the Casinos have "Buffets" and they are all good and inexpensive. I like the one at the "Rio" the most. The "Strip" is very crowded and you would be lucky to average 5 miles per hour. But that is cool because it gives you a chance to look around and see all the sights. You also would want to go downtown, "Old Vegas" and see the free show there. You'll know what it is. All you need to do is look up!
Microsofts Autoroute for the states gives the LV to Grand Canyon village as 277 miles and a driving time of nearly 5 hours, When I drove this journey though I tried to stay of main roads and used route 66 instead. Just so I could say i'd been on it, cant remember how long it took as I stopped of at places on the way
I did that drive about 10 years ago and seem to remember it took about 5 hours because they have signs to say that, if you exceed 55 miles an hour, you could be caught from a camera in a plane. It also depends on how many times you stop for a break. The speed limit may have changed now. I also remember warnings about turning air conditioning off at certain places because of the demands on the engine. I remember stopping at a place called Calico western town, just like a cowboy film set. Try googling it for more info. By the way, if driving back, do not have any fruit in the car or the agricultural police may search your car at the check point and you will be in trouble.
i drove to the grand canyon on my motor cycle, wasn't overly impressed because it's so big i could'nt find a vantage point from where i could really take it all in. whereas, in canyonlands national park utah , the canyons are smaller and you can take them all in, stunning!! if i where to go again i would take one of the grand canyon tours out of the las vegas airport. they low fly you over the whole canyon, takes about 1.5 hours. in 1991 they wanted 90 bucks u.s., wish i had of done it.
