Can anyone tell me how to get into Tibet from mainland China. I've hear that the authorities make it as hard as possible. Any experiences or ideas?

Hey Wickers,

I travelled from China to England by land last year, thru tibet, nepal, india, pak, iran etc.. they're are several ways to get into tibet from china:

1) flight from chengdu (~120) to lhasa - this is the easiest and most common way.

2) jeep from zhondian or chengdu, overland, takes at least 5 days (~320)

3) if you really want to do this by land, and you want to do it cheaply, you have to go up to golmud, then hitch or bribe someone to take you up onto the plateau.. this is most adventurous/risky route - sometimes people get sent back..

the price of the first two includes permits and stuff. for my info use lonelyplanet.com's "Thorntree" message boards - they have all the answers..

hope you get to go - tibet's a crazy place but the chinese are really messing it up fast..! have fun!
