Good evening, I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas
and wish you a great New Year filled with good health, peace,
happiness and rewarding puzzle solving.
I got off to a fairly promising Chalicea start of the first EV for the
year, but am baffled by the following for which I seek some help.
Thanks in advance!

21a Sadly crooks gain making these pessimistic grumbles (9) : C????????
31a Flightless bird of China’s chairman in here unusually ( 8, two words ) : ?AO?IPEN
39a Dry dark-red transparent resin –backing for metallic oxides ( 6 ) : ?AL?EI
40a Eastern maidservant indeed going round oddly keen to cause confusion ( 7, 2 words):
                    ???EHA?
14d Weak ineffectual people from America we see turning up around Northern Ireland ( 7 ):
                    ?????ES
34d By-work built-in from time to time, yes, once for a Shetlander(5)  : ?O?U?

21 Anagram, but remember the 'additional letters produced by wordplay'.

14 More anagramming... 'we see' and the usual Northern Ireland

40 The split is 4.3, definition is to cause confusion/

34 Alternate letters in the clue, an unusual word.

31 Your P is wrong. There's the usual China's chairman and then an anagram (unusually) of 'in here'

Lots of anagrams, Matakari, you should rattle these off now!

Question Author

Good morning, thanks NACW, I grasp the anagram slant used by Chalicea here.
Help with the last set should provide some insight into the theme.  Thanks in advance!

10a Cruel and ugly, therefore being rejected is habitual at first (7): A?H????
17a Humour surrounding newspaper boss and what one’s paid to do (4): E???   ( EDIT )
27a In Perth shelter offer involving cloth measure ( 5 ) : ?IE??
6d Is bothered by systems of excavation when Germany replaces Spain ( 5 ) : ???DS
7d Sees round means of travelling in winter in gadgets for keeping tinnies cold (6 ) ???IES

7    Eskies

6    Minds

4  yes edit  (w) ed it

10a ogreish...4d MOL

27a bi el d    L is extra

Matakaro, thanks - and delighted that you're making progress. I hope you soon 'gain insight into the theme' -  you've got Private Eye and a knotty Spectator in store!

Question Author

Many thanks Roslyn251254 and cashier! I’ve got the extra line of the lyrics for the song and would like to confirm the letters for the 34 cells:

??C?M?NH?MEI?E?O?EM?P?ME?H?TT?D?I?

And thanks, NACW, for the reminder of the “naughty” Magoo Spectator and the Private Eye!

Thanks, Matakari. Your P is wrong in that list - and that list isn't the 34 cells! Check the opening of the preamble...

The P is wrong..5d is TROW from throw out losing the H(last of trasH, O (ordinary) T (last of decrepit)

TROW is a boat

Your list of letters are the perimeter, you need 3 more down the right hand side and all the letters from the bottom row.

The 34 cells to be shaded are inside the grid somewhere....

Matakari, hope you're all sorted now, and that you enjoyed the colouring aspect?!

The Private Eye puzzle has loads of anagrams, I think you'll find it fun. Mr Magoo... maybe not somuch!

Question Author

Thanks, Pomona and NACW, I’ve got the second part of the four-word sentence of the perimeter, but googling the first part is still not producing anything. Can anyone give me any three words from
it to see if that will lead me to the complete statement? Thanks again!

Matakari, you've lost me again - 'the second part of the four word sentence'?

Question Author

Badly expressed, indeed! I meant the last part of the perimeter beginning with you and ending with me. ( "You......me" )

Thanks, Matakari. The 'you... me' simply follows on from the top right hand square - the 'you' is the fifth word, the 'me' is the final word.  I hope that's enough now? (I'm sure most solvers completed it from the words given 'from the cell at the bottom left' instruction.)

Question Author

Yes, I see the ending of the perimeter quite clearly
as you still want me, but struggling to find the beginning.
Vaguely I see "I'm comin home..." Think I have too much
black whisky in my head...put me out of my misery now, give
me any three words of it...thanks!

Matakari, if I had a pound for every time you've been asked to be put out of your misery! Here are three of the words, 'What to do...'

PS I've jus Googled the song, with the opening from 'I'm comin home, I've...' and got the lyrics.(I'm assuming your grid has all the answers now?'

Question Author

I see it more clearly now...On to the co;ouring bit...
Thanks for helping me to trust myself....
