When you have several windows open and you wish to close down your PC, is there a quick way of doing the 'close all' rather than click on all the crosses?

ctl+w or alt+f4.
Or just shut down - Windows will close down all the windows for you.
The hitmaker - loads of people tell me that i must shut down all applications before shutting down the computer and that to just shut down is really dangerous for your PC - are they thus incorrect?
