Off to the US in a few weeks. Last time the wife and I went we didn't pre-book any hotels, except the first night's. We were told to look out for discount coupon booklets in service areas, and these worked just great, got us some good discount at many of our stays. ( It was a driving holiday ). That was 5 years ago - does anyone know if they still do them ?

Oh those can be wonderful, we had the I95 booklet on the East Coast years ago. Recently we've been in the South West and we saw them there , so yes, they still exist. They are usually only valid for one night, so remember to pick up a few copies! Have a great trip.
Last time we did it (a couple of years ago) we stayed mostly at Comfort Inns. We joined their loyalty scheme, which meant we got every fifth night or so free. We used to do it with Econolodges but they've got very run down lately.

You can still get the discount vouchers. You may need to research on the go, though, so you don't get stuck in a dump.
At this time of year, you shouldn't have too much difficulty, as its after Labour Day.

Where are you going ?

Motels in the States are always cheap and very convenient for the highways.

Motel 6 is a really affordable chain. Best Western is another cheaper chain.

I would do as you have done in the past....pre-book the first night, especially if its after a long flight to the West Coast, and then just take off. Beware if you want to visit somewhere like the Grand Canyon.... pre-booking is absolutely essential, even in the low season.
