No chance, rarely works and check in staff and their managers will see you a mile. In any case you have to blag to the right person. The check in staff cannot authorise anything, it is their superviser. In any case, upgrades are given when there is overbooking in economy class. If that is the case, the supervisor knows before check in starts that 4-5 perople will have to be bumped up. The supervisor will keep a close eye on passenegers and make a mental note of their attire (suits should do), attitude, class and behaivour. tatoos are a no no. This is so that they dont make a scene in first class and should fit in to the hallowed ground. If economy is not full you will not NOT get bumped up. It is not fair to the passngers who have paid 10 times your fare for the exclusivity and the airline staff will protect it.
I agree with Dom, get a cheap flight, or pay the extra
If there is any upgrading to be done, priority will be given to the airline's Frequent Flyers.  In any case, very few airlines these days have First Class; the usual configuration is Economy Class and Business Class.
Agree with all the above, but you can get extra leg room by 'volunteering' to work the emergency hatch and sit in the exit row. This summer, we were the first to check in for the flight home from Vancouver and I asked if there was any chance of an upgrade or exit aisle and the lady put us at the 'front of economy' bulkhead. These have bassinetes(sp) for babies and loads of extra legroom and no one in front of you to tilt their seat back(what a great difference to going out!!), so try getting to check in first.
I went to my doctor with a bad back just before my holiday to Cuba in May and she did a letter for the airline that I needed extra leg room.  I rang Thomas Cook ticket office when I got in and they upgraded me straightaway.  When I got to Manchester airport the two seats were ready for me and my daughter and they didn't want to see my letter either.  The seats would have cost 30 each way.  The letter cost me 25 off the doc but it was worth it.  We had front seats with loads of leg room but loads of people kept walking through in front of us and it dead annoying!
My sister works for one of the major airlines
and they have a policy of if you ask
for an upgrade you DO NOT get it.
Unofficialy 1st priority is staff
travelling, then friends / family of
staff etc and a list is circulated
before hand.
All you can hope for is the plane is not
busy and you get 3 seats for 2 people.
Good luck!
