ok, when your ears "pop" its like someone has stuffed dough in your ears and you cant hear properly..a bit like having a heavy cold!it can be painful, make the bit behind your ear lobe ache.
If you yawn or swallow lots they pop back, or if you hold your nose and blow it at the same time(with your mouth shut!) they pop back, no lasting damage, its just the unequal pressure when you descend and rise above a certain height, they can pop back immediately or take up to 2 hours, or you may be very lucky and they wont pop at all!

im glad you wrote it cause if you asked me i wouldnt of heard you cause they popped 10 years ago and they still havent popped back

Ears don't "pop back", as if they pop out then back in again.  If there's a change in atmospheric pressure, the difference in pressure between the chamber behind your ear-drum and outside, your ears pop to equalise the pressures.  This is done via a little safety valve, which looks like a tube with a cap on top.  The muffling is caused by the pressure pressing against the ear-drum, preventing it from vibrating properly.
i think coey wanted a simplified answer not a written docterate!
