Am I right in thinking that this is a closed currency - that can only be obtained in the Ukraine (like Morrocan dirham) ?

It can't easily be obtained outside Ukraine.

A post a couple of years back suggested that HSBC could get it for customers only - whether that's still so. pass

You can buy hryvnia at some airports.
Not sure there's a whole lot of point though.
