Surely nobody would object to paying a toll on newly built roads but do you believe they should be levied on existing trunk roads which in the past have been toll free?

Yes we would object, we already pay enough taxes for the privilege of driving on our roads, particularly in rural areas.

Extra tolls on motorists just drive prices up for everybody.
Why should we the motorist be tolled for something we have already payed for ?.
I don't see why I should pay more, I pay over £200 a year to drive on inadequate roads as it is, so arse to paying for new roads when they can't be bothered to mend the ones that are here. :(
its bad enough being ripped off for the Dartford crossing which has been paid for over and over again.
the story doesn't seem to say that, does it?
Tony, it seems like that doesn't it? Oh, we need this or that, let's put up road tax blah, blah, blah, all the while smug non drivers don't realise that it will affect their pocket through increased delivery costs, groceries etc. Arse!!!
There is no mention at all of paying tolls on existing toll free roads.
we are already subject to highway robbery courtesy of government taxes so no we shouldnt have to pay tolls on ANY roads. its just another way of the fat cats getting fatter.
If I read the article correctly it's about making the traffic flow more freely over toll roads by reducing/getting rid of, toll booths by making the public pay in advance for their crossing. I have no problem with this as long as provision is made for those who use the road infrequently to make payment on site.
///surely nobody would object to paying a toll on newly built roads///
The sheer stupidity of that statement amazes me, I can only assume the OPer is not a driver.
You are going to regret this post Pdj1

The article above does not state specifically that all roads will be tolled but it does say its a trojan horse for others

///Motorists face fines of up to £180 if they fall foul of a new tolling system described as a ‘Trojan horse’ for pay-as-you-drive charging on major roads.///

It has also been spoken about on many media.

Baldric then you object to the tolls on the new road round Birmingham. If there is an alternative it helps the motorist as he can choose to pay or use the existing M6 which is obviously less congested. If you have driven in France this is the norm.
If you get the time Pdj1 Just ask a HGV driver to show you the road Tax on the Truck, then come back on here & repeat your Question.
Question Author
I take it TWR you don't drive on the M6 near Birmingham. If you did you would know it saves on your journey time by having an alternatve toll road.
Ex HGV Driver 40+ years, I think I know the M6 a bit than yourself Pdj1, do your research & see how many HGVs avoid the toll road due to cost, the M6 / M5 Link is still the cheapest, the UK has the highest fuel / Tax / Derv / running costs in Europe, If you want to put a post in, put one on that says, why dont the trafic from Europe use our roads FREE OF CHARGE! then you will have a good point to make.
Question Author
Thats the point TWR because many other drivers are using the M6 toll road it means there is less traffic on the M6 for you. I thought that was common sense...my 6 year old child would know the difference.

Ok once but ......go on TWR 3rd time lucky
Do you drive? do you work? do you own your own house? how do you find the price of food / clothing / petrol / anything that's within your household Pdj?

Do you mean 'do' ?
