Two years ago I had to go to court for having a lorry on the road with the trailer had no MOT on (long story, wrong trailer taken out) anyway I was not arrested. The court gave me a conviction and a fine. Can I travel visa free or will I have to go through the American embassy to go on a family holiday to USA

You should have no problems; I wouldn't even mention the incident to them. But, remember to drive on the right when you get there")

The basic rule is that the offence has to be one of moral turpitude before they are fussed about it and may decide not to let you in. The US wouldn't even recognise the offence; there's no equivalent of the MOT over there; let alone think it was serious or of moral turpitude
Just complete the ESTA online, don't mention it. If you declare it, you'll have loads of hassle trying to get a visa.

The US has no access to UK criminal records.
