Can someone recommend a nice, cosy, traditional small hotel in Winchester city centre - as central as possible please? I have googled and looked already, so please don't just provide links - I am looking for personal experience / recommendations please. Will be for December (not that that really matters)!!

I used to go to Winchester a lot on busness and stayed at the Mercure Winchester Wessex Hotel.

I am not sure if it was a Mercure then but the great thing is that it is right in the centre of Winchester, just yards from the cathedral.

The hotel is built on stilts, so there is a reasonable amount of ground floor parking.

I have just noticed you said "traditional" and I am not sure the hotel can be considered that. It is a modern "chain" hoel, but fine for all that.
