ever heard of desalination plants?

I worked in the UAE for 11 years and it only rained about 20 days a year if that, no water shortage ever, same as other hot country's in the Middle East.

Don't they use lots of energy and thus expensive to run ?
We have them here, but the water still has a salty tinge, and the clothes are all still from washing.
sorry meant the clothes are stiff from washing.
they've been watering Cheltenham horse racing track for the last 3 days. It amazes me that its only ever the domestic user that consumes miniscule amounts of water in comparsion that will suffer.
Are football grounds with real grass too? Or artificial turf? If its the former, I bet we don't see them suffering through lack of water either.
Golf courses are exempt too. I can understand agriculture being allowed to carry on as normal but not sports!
I agree. Agriculture is a priority. Golf courses, etc. should not be exempt. Apparently Jerusalem has had more rain than Norfolk in the last few years.
The excuse is that they are expensive and energy hungry, but i say when the price has to be paid, it has to be paid. It's not like they aren't demanding sky high prices already. So we have a solution to the water problem for this country, now we need to work harder on the energy issue.
will they ban all commercial hand car washes, I wonder, which are now all the rage, and do lots of people out of jobs ?
No, it's a domestic hosepipe ban.
What would a pipeline from Scotland cost?
It might create lots of jobs.
Just as long as Alex Salmond doesn't know where he can turn the tap off...
so if you have plenty of time on your hands you could essentially maintain a luscious green lawn by using exactly the same volume of water and repeatdley filling up a watering can from the tap.
it may be domestic only first, but if water shortage gets worse, they may look at other things. Im sure it happpened in 1976
Look at my answer on the other 'water butt' thread.
I worked in Saudi Arabia for 3 years , Saudi and the UAE use sea water desalination but it is expensive at least 50 x the cost of our system, Saudi & UAE are both oil producers and have the cash to fund desalination.
We had a dual water system in Saudi , the main supply was 'Raw water' still salty but used for irrigation washing and toilet flushing. Each house had 1 tap for 'Sweet water' used for drinking and cooking only .
You must live in East London Trt,as far as I know it's the only one in the UK,but it's time more were built.
Water is very heavy and I cannot lift a full watering can so a hosepipe ban is not good for me. However, up to the moment there seems no need for it in Bristol because it has rained enough to water the plants. I put some bedding plants in on Sunday and the ground was quite moist. I only had to dampen a bit and have watered with the watering can a couple of times since. I didn't use the hosepipe because I couldn't fix the damn thing on the tap and in the end it was easier to half fill the watering can several times and not because I am conscientious about water. Fortunately I have an outside tap which is very useful.
-- answer removed --
I have a hosepipe attached to our outside tap and most of my summer plants are in tubs within a few yards of the tap. Like Starbuck I can't lift a watering can full of water. I shall still use the hose on occasions but won't be using any more water than others using watering cans. I am afraid the rest of our large garden will have to take its chances. Perhaps the time has come to change our gardening habits and only plant things that thrive in dry areas.
Or let some of the garden revert to a wild area. The birds will love it.
Seadogg, Two thirds of my half acre is devoted to wild and birds. I have planted specifically for them. I love it. The area around my back door has loads of tubs for visual effect. I love my garden, but I am not a prissy gardener. No sprinklers on the lawn (well it isn't a lawn really - it is 'grass')!! ;o)
