Im off to Tunisia in a week or so, and I have a coupla queries: Im told you must wear clothes to cover your arms and legs when going into a mosque/place of worship, but is this the only time you have to be covered up? Obviously the beach has slightly more relaxed dress codes but what about checking out ruins/souks etc? Do they take offense to tattoos? Also, anybody know what kind of plug sockets they have out there? That iPod wont get charged on its own!

My experiences of Tunisia and other Muslim countries is to show respect to their culture in both your clothes and mannerisms.

Tunisia is very liberal in comparison to other Islamic states, but you still have to cover arms and legs when going into mosques - indeed, some of the larger mosques will not allow non-Muslims in at all, and you will only be able to see the outer courtyards.

You will have no difficulties wearing shorts or bikinis around your hotel pool or on the beach - last time I was there I even saw a very small number of women at our hotel in Port el Kantaoui sunbathing topless.

In the souks, I would recommend wearing a t-shirt rather than a bare chest or bikini top, as Tunisian men blatently stare at the best of times. You could be putting yourself in an unnecessarily awkward position.  Shorts would be fine too.

When eating breakfast and lunch, both my wife and I wear a top of some kind, and when going out to dinner in the evening, I wear trousers and a short sleeved shirt.  My wife might wear a dress or a top and skirt.  Your hotel might have dress codes for dinner.

I don't think anyone will be offended by tattoos, but cover them up when in a mosque.

i think luckystrike covered just about everything, just watch what u eat, last time i was there got a touch of food poisoning and collapsed at the airport on way home otherwise quite enjoyed the holiday
