To answer your question, no you can not get to all 50 states by train. We have possibly the most usless rail system in the whole world. I include South America as well as North America.

As an offshoot to this, is it possible to travel between all states by the Greyhound Bus (excluding Alaska and Hawaii)? I just wondered how people without cars or the money to afford air fares managed to travel throughout the US.
