I dont know about the BEST place, but many people say at Kissimmee.

If you have a look at this map it is at the bottom, with the Disney parks over on the left

Kissimee is good because there are plenty of places to eat, and loads of shops as well.

One slight problem is the distance from Kissimme to the area around International Drive, Sea World, Universal Studios, Wet and Wild and so on.

International Drive is the "centre" of the theme park area (at least as near the centre as anywhere else) so you are likely to drive there a few times.

It is no big deal, but you need to be aware it is about a 30 minute drive from Kissimme to Universal Studios for example.

The area I am talkjing about is shown on the map, just above the large word Florida in the centre of the map.
You mention Disneyworld in your question, but there are other parks in the area, every bit as good as the Disney parks.

Universal Orlando have two theme parks,

1) Universal Studios, which is TV and Film related

2) Islands of Adventure, which is an amazing theme park for all ages, with some great coasters.

These two parks are next to each other. More here

Nearby is Wet and Wild, a water based parks with flumes etc.

A couple of miles away is Sea World (my favorite park) which is part zoo and part theme park, mostly based round sea animals (as you would expect from the name)

You can buy a combined ticket for these 4 parks which is less expensive than the Disney equivalent.

You can read more about the tickets prices here:

Note the ticket page mentions Busch Gardens. While this is a great theme park it is a long drive from the main Orlando parks and with so much to do in that area it is not worth the drive to Busch Gardens.
The best place is Discovery Cove right opposite Sea World. Pricey (150 per person for the day) but you get lunch and free drinks all day and they only allow 150 people in that day so not busy. You also get to swim with Dolhins, Stingrays and allsorts of other fish. Fantastic. We stayed in Davenport about 30 mins to most parks.
