Can anyone recommend a cheap, no-frills hotel in central Amsterdam, as close a possible to the Centraal station, red light district?

Thanks.

Have posted in Travel. Meant to say it's about 5 mins walk from the station and adjacent to (not in) the red light district. Also near one of the best pubs I have ever been in.

We always use the France Hotel (not far from Gef's recommendation), just across the road from Centraal Station, on a quiet lttle canalside next door to a pub (where you get your breakfast - it's owned by the hotel) and just about - by the skin of its teeth - in the red-light district, and therefore surrounded by interesting little bars and restaurants. It's only a few minutes walk, but crossing the main road outside the station may take you longer than the walk to the hotel! That's true of all the hotels you'll be checking out, of course. http://www.francehotelamsterdam.com
no idea of the name of the one i stayed in when in A'dam, but I've used IBIS hotels loads of time. cheap, clean and cheerful.
you can check/book online.
Just across from the railway station there is an information booth where B&B owners congregate touting for business so you may find a bargain there as I did! Good luck
