If you had, say, 5 days to spend in one of these destinations, which one would you choose and why?

Looking to book a short break for January 2021.

Thanks.

None crime is rampant in all those areas and there is nothing I wish to see.
Rio is pretty amazing but you have to be very careful there as it's not terribly safe. I don`t rave about Buenos Aires - you could do a wine tour to Mendoza I suppose. Haven't been to Santiago. My friend went and came back a couple of days later because he was bored
Just remembered - there's a whole load of trouble in Chile at the moment. My sister was supposed to be heading down that way a few weeks ago and had her holiday cancelled because it wasn't safe. Best avoided for a while
I’ve been to Santiago and Buenos Aries. I loved BA.
I only spent one day in Santiago at the very end of a cruise holiday. I didn’t particularly want to spend more time there. Maybe I didn’t see the best of it, but all I saw was graffiti and litter.
^ That's about right for a lot of S American cities. They put big orange bins everywhere in Rio before the Olympics to encourage people to change their habits. They love their grafitti though.
....and I wouldn't want to go all that way for a "short break".
Why not Montevideo?

You can do Montevideo as a day trip from BA, Dave.

It's neck and neck between Rio and BA atm.
^ Rio any day.
A short break to South America? Plenty places to see in Europe without the jet lag
At that time of the year I`d go to the Middle East for a short break. Oman or Fujairah - you won`t waste so much time flying and the flights are cheaper.

In January, Zacs? No ta.
Ah, ok, just a bit confused as you were looking to go away somewhere in Europe in January last week when you wrote ‘I appreciate that the Baltics are freezing cold in January but I've been to NYC in Jan and experienced those temps before’
I agree with CAC. I've no wish to travel abroad. Having said that and contradicting myself, I've booked to go to Malta in March. It's only for 4 days for a naval memorial that will be attended by the British High Commissioner.
Question Author
That was for a concert, Zacs, not a sightseeing break, and the difference between the two is January 2020 and January 2021. I hope this helps.
Ah, OK.
