A. Most of the main mobile phone manufacturers can support WAP now, so choosing a phone really depends on how much money you want to spend and what fancy adds-ons you're after. A few good phones on the market include the following:

Ericsson R380S

The recently launched new addition to the Ericsson stable is a bit bulky, but it has an easy to read WAP browser and an email programme. It has a stylus for use on a virtual keyboard and a handwriting recognition programme within the phone. You can also link it up to your PC (like a PDA) and save all your important files. Its email programme is very good, i.e. fast and easy to use, and it allows you to read 'headers only' on your incoming email, so its easier to select messages and attachments. The only down-side to this phone is that it cannot display HTML pages. It has 2MB of memory, four hours of talk time and 54 hours of organiser time. Cost: Approximately 450.

Nokia 7110

The first WAP phone on the market, the Nokia 7110, has not past its sell by date and is still one of the most popular models, especially as Genie, One 2 One and BT are now offering it as part of their popular pay-as-you-go packs for about 150. The Genie package (www.genie.co.uk) offers the best deal at the moment, as you get unlimited WAP and text messaging for 10 per month.

Siemens SL45

This WAP phone only weighs 88g and comes complete with its own MP3 player with excellent sound quality. Other features include a modem, games, an IrDA link and a digital voice recorder. It is a gem and costs about 220 with contract.

Motorola V50

Motorola have recently added WAP capability to this popular model, it comes complete with headset and costs around 130.

Sony CMD-Z5

Sony's new model has a great email facility and fast T9 text input. It is also the smallest, and one of the best-looking WAP phones on the market. Cost: 150.

Q. Are there any new mobile phones coming onto the market that I should hold out for

A. The mobile market is ever-changing, so it is difficult to remain ahead of the market. However, if you do want to keep ahead of the game, some new phones will be launched end 2001/ 2002 that just might keep that smug look on your face. The new GPRS phones that have been talked about for so long, will finally hit the high street (the GPRS system will go online in July), some good models will include:

Alcatel GPRS: It is expected that WAP services will be instantaneous on this new handset, so its worth getting excited about. It is due to be launched in the UK in early 2002, and will look more like a PDA than a mobile phone.

Siemens GPRS: Due for launch this summer, Siemens will tag those of you that are chomping at the bit to get your hands on a GPRS. Their model will look like an ordinary GPS phone, with faster WAP services.

Trium Mondo: Trium's new Pocket PC combines a PC processor with a mobile phone. It has WAP capabilities, a colour screen, a personal organiser, email, and a Windows Media Player. Its big show-off facility is its speakerphone that allows for a massive six-way conference call. Trium have yet to announce a price for the Mondo.

Sendo Z100: Expected to launch in autumn 2001, the Z100 will have a tri-band GPRS handset and use Microsofts' Stringer Smartphone platform. Cost: Not yet know.
