Restore factory settings

I have a lap top which is full of rubbish. I have removed some programmes but there are bits left over. How can I restore it to it's original state. ie take everything off and start again. It operates on windows vista

back everything up, then find the recovery stuff on the comp, and run through that

or press f8 on start up an options to reformat etc should appear

Check that you have any driver discs that may be necessary to re-install printer/video drivers/internet etc... before you re-format everything.
