I want to be able to see and hear what is on my laptop on my tv (eg like a youtube video), please can someone tell me what output/input sockets I need on each device (like RGB/VGA/SVideo etc) and what corresponding connectors I will need (I am purchasing both a new TV and a new laptop). Please don't be too "techno language" in your replies, as I only have a basic understanding of these things. Many thanks.

Might help if you posted details of your laptop .. like the name and model maybe? Preferably an HDMI out socket. That should be fine to transmit TV pictures.
Laptops with this standard as an output are not cheap, tho.

thanks for your reply Albags, but I think you misread my question. I am about to purchase a new tv and laptop, and I want to know what outputs/inputs I would need to look for/make sure I get, on each device in order to acheive laptop to tv pics and sounds, it's got nothing to do with "transmitting tv pcitures".
HDMI
TV should have more that one input .. preferably three!
As Albags says, simply look for a laptop that has an HDMI output and a TV that has HDMI inputs (pretty much all new TVs will have this).

You then connect one to the other with an HDMI cable that looks like this: http://tinyurl.com/67j6tot
