I am creating (or trying to) a spreadsheet module most of which is working fine but I have a problem in one area.

Say cell A5 has a cost per unit value, and col D has weekly consumption values, and col E has YTD values and I want to know the weekly and YTD cost . I can copy and paste the formula E5 =D5-D4 * A5 which is fine in E5 but rubbish in E6 ..E58 because it takes A6.. A58 which have no entry. How can I fix the value in A5 so that it is used in every descending cell?

Use help file and search for absolute cell reference
I still us the old $ sign
I refer to the cell as $D$5 (or is it D$5$ ?)
Or using dollar signs and A5 in your example

Many thanks I will try help again I must have got something wrong before. One suggestion from a friend was copy & paste A5 to A6...A58 and hide the column but thought that a bit archaic.

The $ before col and before row is the answer $A$5 and it works fine
