It's called 'ring trip'.

It's usually caused by either a faulty piece of equipment of faulty wiring.

Could be a dodgy phone / router / sky box / broadband filter / anything that plugs into a phone socket.

It's a process of elimination ... unplugging things until it 'solves' the problem.
Obviously not the postman then.
Firstly, unplug everything from your main BT socket and plug in just a telephone ... unplug all extensions and adaptors.

If it still trips the ringing, it's their problem.
Naz is correct..

But to be absolutely sure undo the two screws on the front of the master socket and pull the front off towards you and you'll see another telephone socket behind the front panel. plug your phone in there and try it before calling BT.

I've unplugged everything and connected new phone and still have 'ring trip'. Phoned BT who tested the line with everything unplugged. Their tests told them it was not my equipment and an engineer will be out to investigate at no cost to me. Hopefully that will be it resolved!
Sweet.
Hi Pete

If I remeber well, I was told to add an extra in-line filter & that solved the problem.
