Boot failure with a port replicator

I have  an IBM ThinkPad T40 which boots normally when out of the port replicator. However , when in the replicator, it hangs on the initial ThinkPad splash screen and will go no further. I have replaced the port replicator with a new one and got  the same result. I cannot even boot in safe mode.  What could be causing this and how do I fix it?

Firstly, has it worked at all?

This laptop did boot normally while in the port replicator until about 3 days ago.  The laptop still boots normally out of the replicator, but hangs when you try to boot in the replicator. I'm not sure if it is a hardware issue or a software issue.

I've had a very similar problem with a Toshiba laptop. It was hardware related but funnily enough not with the port replicator.

The laptop ended up going in for repair and they fitted a new Motherboard. Sounds drastic but I think that was done to replace the interface to the port replicator.
