I am having problems with Adaware - when I ask it to scan my system for spyware, it starts off ok and then having scanned a certain number of files (71,000 last time - do I really have that many?!), nothing further happens, even though it tells me it is scanning the system.  I have tried just leaving it for several hours, but it has definitely hung!  Any suggestions?

It may have encountered spyware which is blocking its progress. Try starting your PC in safe mode (you can google to find out how to do this as it is slightly different between operating systems) and then run Adaware again.

Running in safe mode means that none of the spyware is running and therefore cannot block Adaware.

Further to Abe's answer....Boot as normal then click Ctrl Alt Del and look at the processes....then may take 20 or so minutes to do compare each process with http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/winmgmt/

Just type in whatever it is and this may help....In any case this is a handy link to add to your Fave's for the future believe me.

before starting the scan, empty all the temp directories, and your temporary internet files directory.

This should speed things up a bit, also, if you are running windows xp or 2k, download and install microsoft antispyware, and do a full scan using that.

reinstall it!!!!!!

Further to adydb's answer. If you are running windows 98, CTRL+ALT+DELETE doesn't necessarilty display all running processes.

You can download software that does display all running processes. I cannot remember where at the moment.
