receiving my hotmail mails via my mobile

I have linked my mobile phone to my hotmail account and i'm told i'll be charged 10p each time i use the service. I sent an email to myself on the pc and it arrived on the phone without my using the send/receive emails button on the mobile. How do i ensure the service will only operate when i want it to and not automatically receive emails?
