My laptop is now unusable, because i stupidly opened a spam mail by mistake. It was an UPS parcel delivery email. but when i tried to open it , it started taking me around in circles, and in the finish gave me a virus.
At present i have a AVG anti-virus
any advice would be appreciated

Download the free version of Malwarebytes from:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
and run a full system scan. That should shift it.

You realise what you did was stupid so I won't berate you as I'm sure you won't do it again.
Question Author
i agree it was stupid, but i am awaiting delivery of some parcels, and have had at least 2 come by UPS.
thanx for the info sq bear
Ah at least you were waiting for a parcel. Many people click on these things out of curiosity. Malwarebytes should see you ok.
Question Author
cant seem to download malwarebytes, it seems to be going around in circles, plus you cant see the download progress, also the bloody virus constantly gives you pop up reminders. should i wait?
It is not a virus but malware/spyware.

Unfortunately these types of malware can really screw up your system, they change network settings, Windows settings, security settings and so on.

Try doing a Windows system restore.

If that works then back up all your important files "just in case"
Question Author
hi vhg, i'm a novice when it comes to computers. i was really hoping malwarebytes was going to help me out. now yr saying the opposite.
how can i do a windows system restore?

thanx

piggy
Hi Piggy, Malware is a program that screws up your PC. Marwarebytes is a program that will try and remove Malware. So you can install it don't worry.
Start, Programs, Accessories, System tools, system restore. Choose a restore point prior to you clicking on the email. Only do this unless someone you know can download malwarebytes for you. Run it in safe mode.
Question Author
hi ttg, i've followed yr instructions, clicked on system restore, as i havent much of a clue, i'm waiting for ,something to happen. i have no idea how to choose a restore point prior to the email, nor how to run it in safe mode, help please

piggy
Piggy ............ Restore Points are dates.............. choose the day before you clicked on the email, and follow the prompts.......... very simple, honestly
Question Author
hi builder, i followed ttg;s advice and went to start, programmes, accesssories, system tools and finally system restore, when i clicked on the system restore i go a window asking me to run it or cancel, at what point or where will i find these restore points/dates?

1 confused piggy
Run it Piggers ................ no problem :o)
Question Author
it must be a long process, as nothings happened really changed as of yet, and its been over an hour now. still gettting the pop up virus windows, and still cant access the internet, thats why i'm using my frigging desktop
Should only take a few minutes Piggy. The malware is screwing it up. You should be in Safe Mode.
Reboot ......... hit F8 before the Windows screen ............... select Safe Mode ...... then eventually .......... System Restore
Question Author
the problem seems 2b the F8, i cant seem to press it at the right time, cuz every time i press it, nothing happens. i've tried rebooting til i'm blue in the face, then when the screen lights up again to ask for the password, i press F8, nothing, then i wait after ive entered the password, then press F8 again, still nothing. its either me, or i dunno
You have to start pressinf F8 as soon as the computer starts booting - if you get to the screen which says Windows is loading you're too late.
When you do get the magic screen, choose safe mode with networking - that should let you get on line and download Malwarebytes.
If you really can't get to that option, download Malwarybytes on the desktop, put it on a USB stick and then install it from the stick onto your laptop. Ideally you should run it in safe mode because you will need to get teh latest updates before doing a scan, but if you really can't get into safe mode it won't hurt to try running it anyway.
If all else fails, use the desktop to download and burn the Avira rescue disk to CD, then use that to boot the laptop and let it run a scan. You can download it from http://www.free-av.co...ir_rescue_system.html and a tutorial on using it is at http://forum.avira.co...Thread&threadID=82163
Oh yes, there is also a portable version of Superantispyware which you can run from a USB stick or CD - download it from http://www.superantis.../portablescanner.html but read the page first ! The file you download will ahve a random name to fool the kind of malware programs which block access to known anti-malware scanners and websites
Question Author
thanx huderon, i'll give it a go tomorrow.

cheers

piggy
Question Author
hello huderon, i tried to read the superantis/portable scannner on my emac desktop. but it didnt make any sense, just lots and lots of senseless words
Question Author
i still have the virus from UPS, i'm going around in circles here. in the end i went to an internet cafe, downloaded the superantis../portablescanner. but someone i just couldnt put it on my pendrive. so i attached it and sent it to another email address i have. so i'm now at that stage where i need to put it on my pendrive from the email on my eMac computer. will this be possible, as it seems more complex than windows
