I have a contract with o2 for my mobile. Can i buy a new handset from anywhere and just put my sim card in it. will it work ok, or do I have to get the handset from o2?

Most networks lock their phones, o2 dont (except maybe on the handsets they makes themselves). U may have to get your handset unlocked first, if say Orange has locked it, but eventually your o2 sim should work in it ok.

how would i get it unlocked?

You can either contact O2 (by 'phone if you want) and tell them you want it unlocked (they will then supply you with a code and tell you what to do with it) or you can take it to an independent ("backstreet") 'phone shop in town and get them to do it.

The first way can take a week and they'll charge you (and you'll usually have to have had the mobile for at least a year before they'll do it). The second way is cheaper, quicker and they don't care how long you've had the 'phone.

Indie singer has got things a**e about face of course,it is not your current phone which needs unlocking. Sim-free phones are readily available, albeit more expensive, from Carphone Warehouse or Phones4U in the High Street or myriad web sites. Alternatively buy a PAYG phone and get it unlocked, many independant phone shops carry out this service.
