Roberts SOUND 53 - MP53 ipod problems

I have the Roberts Sound 53 - MP53, and as I have the Sony walkman S series mp4 player I thought it would be ideal for use in the Roberts, however it does not fit into the docking station, I now realise (a little late) that it only takes IPOD's.
I have never owned an ipod only Sony MP3 players and foolishly thought the docking station fit would be universal. I have no experience of an IPOD at all. Are they difficult to download music to? With my Sony I would simply install music from my cd collection via my computer - is it as easy with an ipod or do I have to always use iTunes...sorry to sould so clueless.
Any help would be great.
